Our N/ATION Review:

“Trunk Tea” may not sound like the perfect name for a line of craft, non-alcoholic cocktails. But like so many other things in the deep South, there’s a story involved. Founder Emily Wines' grandfather (known by many as ‘Honey’) loved to vacation across the great state of Alabama he called home, his wife and two daughters in tow. But in a place where dry counties are nearly as common as vibrant red clay, he couldn’t always find a drink to enjoy during those well-deserved breaks. A portable bar cart that could fit in his trunk became the solution, and soon “Trunk Tea” would become a phrase passed down to Emily through her father. In a modern-day twist, the irony of that name now adorning a line of drinks to help moderate alcohol consumption feels like the perfect next chapter.

Their lineup currently includes NA takes on four different cocktails from the alcohol world, but rather than just go with the usual classics like a margarita or paloma, they’ve mixed it up a little.

Trunk Tea Caiprinha

Caiprinha is one of those options off the beaten path. Perhaps most famous for being Brazil’s national cocktail, it’s typically made with rum as the base. Trunk Tea’s take on this South American favorite has definite tastes of lime, along with being tart and sweet.

Trunk Tea Cosmo

A little more traditional, the Cosmo is part of the gimlet family of drinks, with bright, tart, and citrusy flavors aplenty. With its famous pink hue, this version certainly delivers on the tart and sweet.

Trunk Tea Bee’s Knees

Another classic, Bee’s Knees continues the taste trend of tart, with lemon and a hint of honey, which you get on the nose as well. If you want to dial back the sweetness just a tad, pour some over a few ice cubes.

Trunk Tea Aviation

A sophisticated choice, traditional Aviation cocktails also include lemon, along with floral flavors such as creme de violette, giving this drink a distinctive purple-y color. On the drier side from its brethren, we found Trunk Tea’s Aviation to be a bit unique from the group, and we were glad to have saved it for last.
