Our N/ATION Review:

In the state of Wisconsin, they take their drinking pretty seriously. In a recent survey the state ranked first in the nation in reported binge drinking, with 26.2% of adults exceeding 4-5 drinks in a two-hour period. In other studies, several of Wisconsin’s counties rank amongst the country’s drunkest per capita. None of which is to glorify alcohol, nor condemn the fine people of the Badger state who provide the nation much of our milk, butter and cheese as America’s Dairyland (just check the license plates). But in reflection of those numbers, two things can be true. One, Wisconsinites know a thing or two about adult drinks. And two, maybe swapping in some non-alcoholic ones at least every once in awhile couldn’t hurt.

On that last note, enter Madison, Wisconsin’s Mock & Co., a brand with strong nostalgia vibes reminiscent of the cocktail brands of old. With a lineup of Old Fashioned mocktails launched in early 2025, they are laser-focused on nailing a non-alcoholic version of the state’s official adult drink, offering several different options for all tastes. We sampled two of those flavors, below.

Mock and Co SWEET Old Fashioned

On the nose, this one has clear aromas of a syrupy Old Fashioned, so bonus points for setting the stage appropriately where other RTD mocktails may fall short. Pouring a pinkish red hue, the first sip hints at the combination of fruit and other flavors inside, although for us the one that seemed most dominant early was the pomegranate.

Mock and Co SOUR Old Fashioned

With less aroma on the nose than the Sweet, we were a bit hesitant about just how sour the taste might be, but for us it was a pleasant surprise that any sourness was very subtle. As with the former, the complexities of various deep fruits were evident in the flavor, though for us it was the grapefruit that seemed to peek through more prominently this time.

All in all, we found both versions delightful, especially given the difficulty of trying to match the complexity of the full-alcohol original, using ginger to replicate the burn. We preferred the SWEET version ourselves, which just felt a bit more flavorful and a more close facsimile of the OG. But if an Old Fashioned can feel a bit too syrupy for you, your tastes might actually align more closely with the SOUR (they also make a version with no added sugars, as well).
